Sarnath Deer Park
The Sarnath Deer Park (also known as the Sarnath Mini Zoo) was officially established in 1956 and is a recognized member of the Central Zoo Authority. Located near Varanasi, this highly popular park houses a variety of animal and bird species. It is named the "Deer Park" because deer are universally seen as a symbol of peace. The surrounding archaeological grounds feature historic landmarks like the Dhamek Stupa and the ruins of ancient monasteries, while the nearby Sarnath Archaeological Museum houses
the famous Lion Capital of Ashoka alongside early Buddhist sculptures. Sarnath has served as a natural habitat for deer since the time of the Buddha. According to ancient Buddhist texts and historical records, a vast deer park existed here when Lord Buddha first arrived after attaining enlightenment. It was on this very ground that he met his first five disciples and delivered his inaugural sermon. This sacred site marks a monumental milestone in Prince Siddhartha’s journey to becoming known to the world as Gautama Buddha.
